Ever seen a movie and thought to yourself, “that’s not what the trailer looked like”? Trailers that mislead and misdirect can be a canny marketing technique but, in the right hands, can be a new kind of entertainment in itself. Here are ten of the finest mash-ups currently on offer – some old, some new, and some for movies we’d definitely like to see.
10. Arrested Development as an action film
Last we heard Mitch Hurwitz was still plugging away at some sort of script for the Arrested Development film. He should save some time and make this movie.
9. Must Love Jaws
Proof that Spielberg’s maritime thriller can be turned into a romance and that James Blunt exists primarily to aid parody.
8. The Big Lebowski and Macgyver
Relive some of the Dude's finest moments to the cheesy Macgyver theme. It works amazingly well. You won't get me to call it 'DudeGyver' though.
7. Tom Hanks as James Bond
Someone spent a lot of time with a lot of Tom Hanks movies to make this. If this is part of a campaign to actually get Tom Hanks to take the role, count me in.
6. West Side Story and Zombies
This mash-up answers the question "What could make the greatest musical of the twentieth century even better?"
5. Toy Story / The Dark Knight
Stay with this one. It’s worth it just for the appearance of Mr. Potato Head.
4. The Goonies / Pirates of the Caribbean
Wouldn’t Pirates of the Caribbean been more enjoyable overall if Corey Feldman was in it?
3. 10 Things I Hate About Commandments
This mash-up gets the soundtrack and the ‘new kid in school’ formula perfectly.
2. Shining
Here’s Stephen King’s thriller as a kooky family comedy. Peter Gabriel is an inspired, wonderful choice.
1. Brokeback to the Future
For many, this was the trailer mash-up that started it all – and turns out to be quite a perceptive interpretation of the original films.
